Manolo Blahnik's second collection for Birkenstock has arrived

Is this the greatest sandal collaboration ever?

There has never been more belief in the strength of collaboration in fashion. From major fashion houses teaming up on one-off collections to seemingly aesthetically opposite brands pairing up on capsules, more designers than ever are seeing the benefit of teamwork.

And, one of the most successful of these unexpected collaborations in recent months saw perhaps the most glamorous footwear brand in the world join forces with one of the world's most comfortable, Manolo Blahnik and Birkenstock. And, they are back for round two.

The two iconic brands have come together once again to create a one-of-a-kind collection of shoes, which merge craftsmanship with function, glamour with practicality. Blahnik has put his signature spin on some of Birkenstock's trademark styles, adding polka dots and PVC to the Arizona sandals and the Boston clog.

Although the two labels may seem worlds apart, in many ways, they make the perfect pair.

"Quality and timelessness is something that is present in both brands," Blahnik told us when the first collection launched. "Aesthetically we may look different but fundamentally we have the same values; exquisite fit, craftsmanship and comfort are the most important parts of both of our shoe-making design and production."

When it came to designing the collections, Blahnik said he wanted to create versatile pieces – and it feels that what he has created would suit the regular Birkenstock wearer, but also the Manolo woman.

"I wanted to make something that can be worn casually but also that I think would look fabulous with a ball gown, a sort of ‘dressed-up’ Birkenstock. The pieces are exquisite. Each shoe was made in Birkenstock’s factory and they have some of the finest artisans.

"It was just wonderful to use signature Manolo fabrics – and it’s all about the finishing touches, the shoes are beautifully lined, with French piping on the edges. We also covered the cork sole in leather to colour match the upper, very sleek and makes more of a statement."

The first collection was an immediate sell-out with most styles and sizes flying off the virtual shelves within hours of arriving, and we can expect the same to happen with round two.

The second Manolo Blahnik for Birkenstock collection is now available to shop on Mytheresa, Net-a-Porter, Manolo Blahnik, Birkenstock and various other retailers – but you will have to move fast to get yourself a pair.
