Dina Asher-Smith: Inside my beauty bag

The record-breaking sprinter shares the products she swears by – on and off the track

“I feel the most beautiful after I’ve won a race,” Dina Asher-Smith tells Bazaar in our exclusive video. “I feel fabulous, I feel like Beyoncé!” she jokes.

Naturally, being an athlete, she values her body for “what it can do, rather than what it looks like”. That’s one reason why Asher-Smith’s such a fierce advocate for young women entering sport. “It’s amazing for you in so many different ways but also it’s important for how you view yourself”.

That’s not to say she doesn’t embrace cosmetics when racing – quite the contrary. Her best beauty trick is using milk of magnesia as a primer to ensure her make-up stays put on the track. “Whenever I’m racing, and I’m sweating, I typically put this on underneath, so it doesn’t budge – even if it rains, I’ve just got a nice beat face!”

Her hero products include the Pat McGrath Labs Sublime Perfection Setting Powder – “a staple of my beauty bag”, and the “bougie” Christian Louboutin Beauty mascara. “I feel like a princess when I use it,” she says. And while Asher-Smith identifies as “very big on eyebrows and lashes,” she considers blusher “the cherry on top” (her favourite being Lancome’s Teint Idole Ultra Wear Blush Stick).

It was during the pandemic that the 26-year-old Londoner properly got into skincare, too. “I really invested in my skincare routine and perfected that,” she says, citing the Lancome Hydra Zen Leave On Masque and Advanced Genifique Eye Cream as favourites. They mean she doesn’t look tired when she wakes up. “That’s what you want isn’t it? Not to look exhausted even though you might be!”

Another overnight saviour is her Starface Hydro-Stars Spot Stickers which she confirms stop breakouts in their tracks. And when it comes to fragrance – to the amusement of Asher-Smith’s opponents – she always spritzes before she sprints. “Van Cleef and Arpels’ Moonlight Patchouli is my favourite.”

For our photo and video shoot, make-up artist Rachel Singer Clark employed Asher-Smith's melt-proof make-up tip. "We used a touch of milk of magnesia to prep the skin and help hold the make-up," she recalls of the "very hot blistering bank holiday".

The make-up artist explained that "Dina wanted her brows structured with really clean, flawless-looking skin with a touch of contour". For her brows and eyes this meant defining them with Shiseido's Brow Ink Trio (a three-in-one pencil, powder and brush) and ArchLiner Ink micro-precision liquid liner.

For the skin she perfected the athlete's complexion with Shiseido's Synchro Skin Self-Refreshing Concealer where needed, before using the darkest shade of the Synchro Skin Correcting GelStick Concealer to contour. On the apples of the cheek Singer Clark "very lightly" applied the Inner Glow Cheek Powder in shade Cocoa Dusk.

To finish, the make-up artist "framed the lip with the Shiseido Lipliner InkDuo in Espresso".
