Celebrity weddings always have a huge impact on bridal trends – and Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker's extravagant Italian nuptials will no doubt serve as inspiration for many couples in the coming months, particularly the bride's Dolce & Gabbana ensemble, which was an excellent example of someone shunning those traditional wedding rules, and injecting the day with her personal style instead.
On Sunday, Kardashian walked down the aisle for a third time, having officially married Barker in Santa Barbara earlier in the week, and after an unofficial Las Vegas ceremony, which followed a booze-fuelled night at the Grammy's in April.
For this wedding, the bride wore a one-of-a-kind Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda mini dress that was inspired by Italian lingerie, complete with silk, satin and lace.
Kardashian teamed the unexpected design with a dramatic, wide, long, hand-embroidered veil, featuring floral lace appliqués, which were inspired by the flowers of the nearby Portofino gardens. The veil was also hand-embroidered with a large depiction of the Virgin Mary and the words "family loyalty respect", a quote which was taken from one of Barker's tattoos. She added tulle gloves and white lace pumps.
Although many elements of the outfit were very traditionally bridal, much of the look – and indeed the outfits that she wore across the three-day wedding extravaganza, including a black mini dress and black veil for the rehearsal dinner – were unique and channelled the gothic style that has become her signature ever since she first started dating the Blink 182 drummer.
Getting married in lingerie or in extravagant gothic lace may not be for every bride, but what Kardashian proves – which is also what so many celebrity brides have proved of late – is that wedding fashion is no longer about following a strict set of rules.
Instead, more and more, brides are embracing their personal style and dressing like themselves on their big days, whether that is wearing the traditional big white gown or something completely unexpected.
